session look like? I’ll spend a few minutes with you talking about your horse. I will assess your horse through a series of palpations & evaluations from head to toe looking for pain or restriction. You are welcome to watch the bodywork session but I’m generally quite quiet while working with your horse as I’ll need my full attention on your horse to read his/her subtle cues to communicate with me about what is going on in his/her body. Bodywork sessions generally take one to one and a half hours for first time clients and follow up sessions generally last about an hour. But it all depends on the horse and I always work on “horse time” meaning that the session may be shorter or longer depending on what the horse is presenting and how he/she responds to the bodywork. If the horse is in work on the day of the bodywork session, it’s best to do this before the session and the horse should have at least 30 minutes to cool down before the session. At the end of the session, I’ll give you an overview of the bodywork session and discuss next steps: follow up appointment and techniques and exercises for you to do in between sessions. It’s important to note that this method works on the nervous system and the horse’s response to that will determine the length of the session, it will also determine how much time the horse might need off from work after the session (we generally recommend at least one day). We can discuss this at the conclusion of the session. These are all things to consider when scheduling the appointment day and time. Those of us in the equine assisted services world know how hard equine assisted service work is on horses on so many levels (physically and psychologically) and I began to see how hard it was on the horses that I worked with. I learned of the Masterson Method when seeing it being used on a horse that was exhibiting some behavioral problems in the equine assisted services program that I was working with. So, I took a detour from my equine assisted service path to focus strictly on the horse. After completing an extensive training and certification with the Masterson Method (Masterson Method Certified Practitioner-MMCP), along with another certification specific to Equine Assisted Service Programs (Masterson Method Equine Specialist-MMES), I am now bringing my combined certifications and knowledge to support equine assisted service programs. I feel that horses in this line of work need bodywork. In the course of my journey, I came to realize that the horses were helping the people but the horses weren’t always receiving the same benefit. Meet Lincoln (pictured to the right), who is a trail horse. We began to question if it was time for retirement due to how uncomfortable he was on the trail but Lincoln was not of retirement age (12). Two days after his first Masterson Method session, we went for a trail ride and he was a different horse, literally from the minute that he hit the trail. He looked as if he was walking on a cloud and I had never seen that much movement in his hind end. He immediately went into a full gallop the minute he got into the woods, it was like he was saying, “I’m back and I feel incredible!” We got Lincoln back that day!
